Want to become a member of the Sierra Youth Coalition_ It's easy!
There two ways for you to become a member of the Sierra Youth Coalition:
- You can pay $20 and fill out a membership form to become an SYC member.
- If your group has two paid members and has filled out a group form everyone within the group becomes associate members.
Associate SYC members are included in the number of SYC members and can be active in SYC campaigns, events, and activities under the SYC name. They can be added to the SYC email list and submit articles for the homepage or regional zines. Associate SYC members are not considered Sierra Club members and can not vote in SYC or Sierra Club elections unless they become paid members. They will not receive regular SYC or Sierra Club mail-outs but should get the information through their group. Active and non-active Associate member names should be registered with the national office.
Frequently asked questions about joining SYC
If am part of an existing environmental group, can our group join the Coalition_
- Of course you can! The only requirements we have is that you have two paid SYC members and that you fill in a very simple group form (link to the group form).
By joining the Coalition can we work on any issue that we want to_
- The SYC does not tell groups what issue they have to take on but you should talk to the Regional Coordinator in your area about what you are doing. Also if you choose to participate in civil disobedience you can not do it under the SYC name. Our only two restrictions is that an issue should be related to the environment (this includes social justice issues) and be legal.
By joining SYC do we have to change our name_

No way! we want groups to keep a feeling of regional identity and autonomy while linking into a national community. There are basically three
types of groups:
- Groups that adopt the SYC name.
- Groups that take action within the coalition.
- Groups that are only a part of the coalition for our resources.
Do we have to be students to start an SYC group_
- Not at all. We have university, high school, and community groups. You also do not have to be a student to join any of the high school, and university groups.
Do I have to be between the ages of 15-25 to be active within the SYC_
- Nope. If you are part of a group (ie associate member) you can be any age. We do ask that our volunteer leadership positions remain open for youth so that we can continue to be youth led.
